THE SECRET OF LIGHTHOUSE ISLAND
A full moon rises over a lighthouse by the sea on a breezy tropical evening. Just what is the secret of this lighthouse? Who knows. Stories have been told of a lighthouse keeper who fell to his death during the great Florida hurricane of 1926. Some say his ghost still haunts the lighthouse but can only been seen on a night when the full moon is bright and the tide is high.
Okay scary ghost stories aside, this was a full moon rising directly over the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse in South Florida. The lighthouse has been shining it's beacon since 1907 and is a Florida landmark. While the story is fun, there actually was a lighthouse keeper who stayed in the lighthouse during the Florida Hurricane of 1926. He weathered the storm inside the lighthouse as the Category 4 storm raged outside all the while worrying if the lighthouse would stand. Thankfully it did and the lighthouse keeper survived to tell the tale.
My name is Mark Andrew Thomas and I'm a photographer and filmmaker currently residing in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I grew up in Florida right next to the Everglades and although I photograph a wide variety of subjects and locations, the Florida Everglades will always be my first love. In my career I've had the honor of working with the NatGeoWild Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Science Network, ABC HD, and other worldwide media outlets. I hope you'll find something here that speaks to you and brings you joy, rekindles your sense of wonder, or brings back a great memory of a place you've been to. Thank you for visiting! ~ Mark Andrew Thomas
