Description
THE MOON WARRIORS
Two Portuguese Man O' War glow on the shore at night as a distant full moon rises over the ocean at Fort Lauderdale Beach. Rough seas and high winds made this shoot a little difficult but I actually love conditions like this as they can sometimes make for more interesting photos. I used a tiny maglite behind each Man O' War to make them appear as if they were glowing from within. The storm clouds were rolling in fast and I was lucky enough to get the moon before it disappeared a few seconds later.
Portugese Man O' War get their name from their resemblance to 18th century Portuguese warships at full sail. The tentacles of a Man O' War can sting for several days after they wash up onshore. While they rarely pose a serious threat to humans, the tentacles can leave painful welts on the skin which can last for days. An interesting fact about Man O' War is that they are not single organisms at all, they are siphonophores which is actually a colony of organisms working together. Each organism is a clone of the other and has a separate task to do. How's that for a SciFi movie description?
Despite their reputation the Man O' War is a fascinating creature and is truly one of nature's most beautiful works of art.
