Description
BELVEDERE CASTLE
A view of Belvedere Castle located in Central Park, New York City. The castle was built in 1865. and designed as a Victorian style folly, a type fantasy structure without a real purpose or function. It's primary function at the time was to be a beautiful backdrop for the surrounding area.
In 1919 the National Weather Service began taking wind speed measurements from the castle and then later on starting recording rainfall as well and this continues to this day.
Belvedere Castle is a beautiful and stunning structure and even the name Belvedere means "beautiful view" in Italian. It is located near the Delacorte Theater which is best known for it's Shakespeare in the Park performances every summer.
The castle features two observation areas which offer panoramic views of the park. Inside the castle are many historical artifacts such as skeletons and paper mache birds. It is also the home of the Henry Luce Nature Observatory with microscopes and telescopes on display so visitors can see how naturalists study the world.
