Description
WARRIOR OF THE WIND
A Portugese Man O' War photographed on Fort Lauderdale Beach with a full moon beginning to appear on the horizon. The glow effect was achieved by using a small maglite and illuminating the Man O' War from behind. The Portugese Man O' War gets it's name from it's resemblance to 18th century Portuguese warships at full sail. The Man O' War drifts along the ocean at the mercy of the wind and the tides. Usually, where there is one there are several and the tentacles of a Man O' War can reach 30 feet in length. The tentacles can deliver a painful sting long after they appear lifeless.
The description of the Portuguese Man O' War sounds like something from a science fiction movie. They aren't single organisms, the Man O' War is made up of a colony of organisms working together. These groups of genetically identical individuals are called zooids and are clones of each other and are each responsible for a different task.
